Music is an integral part of the St. Alcuin curriculum. Within the Toddler and Primary Programs, it is incorporated into the classroom through sensorial experiences with bells, singing and movement in a group environment. As the children mature, the music curriculum is more developed.

The Lower Elementary music curriculum is based on the work of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly, and closely parallels the work carried on in the Montessori classroom. Folk songs from around the world are supplemented by listening repertoire and movement games from a variety of cultures. Students acquire basic notation, rhythmic and music vocabulary skills through the use of a wide variety of classroom instruments. Performance opportunities for those students who wish to participate include the Lower El Choir, the Grandparents' Day Celebration, the annual Holiday Sing, the Lower El Play, Founder's Day, the Solo Concert Series, May Day and the Middle School Graduation.

Upper Elementary students attend general music classes one hour a week and an additional weekly music theory class. Song literature for these students is presented in musical notation and two- and three-part singing is encouraged. Listening repertoire representing the major style periods (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Modern Era) is studied and performed vocally and instrumentally. Great emphasis is placed on improvisation and original composition in movement and in the use of classroom instruments. Weekly music theory classes concentrate on ear training, sight reading/singing, vocabulary and other basic musical skills. Upper El students may choose to participate in the Upper El Choir, the Instrumental Program, the Grandparents' Day Celebration, the annual Holiday Sing, the Upper El Play, Founder's Day, the Solo Concert Series, May Day and the Middle School Graduation.

The Middle School curriculum is centered around achieving the objectives of the International Baccalaureate program and the National Standards for Music Education. The music classes include a study of music history, listening and analysis of major works, aural and theory skills with emphasis on sight-singing skills, rhythm training with percussion ensemble experience and the study of the major composers. Classes are frequently integrated with other subjects to build on the foundations of our students' learning, and to provide to the 'whole' child. The Middle School students have also participated in producing and performing a musical each year. Recent productions have included 'The Music Man', 'Bye Bye Birdie' and 'Oklahoma'. In 2005-06 the students have chosen to produce and perform 'Grease' at the Eisemann Performing Arts Centre. Elective classes have included a Rock Band which is open to any student who wishes to participate. The Middle School students may also choose to learn either a brass, woodwind, string or percussion instrument at school and also participate in the newly formed St. Alcuin School Band.

With a long history of great performances from our Elementary and Middle School levels, St. Alcuin is dedicated to supporting performing arts in our music curriculum. Based in the Wyly Performing Arts Center, a theater in the round facility, the performing arts courses produce productions in traditional theater and musicals.
