St. Alcuin's Spanish Language Program begins in the Primary classroom and continues through Middle School. Each level is staffed with its own foreign language faculty member with age-appropriate curriculum.  The goal is to provide a high-quality, immersive spanish program throughout the school.

The Spanish curriculum in the Primary, in the words of Maria Montessori, seeks to "sow the seeds of interest" for future language learning. This means creating enjoyment, awareness, and an eagerness to learn more.

Spanish in the Elementary School goes deeper into the language and grammar, as well as developing a rich cultural awareness in each student.  Lower Elementary students learn common vocabulary, simple phrases and various commands to help them obtain the tools and skills needed to communicate clearly.  The lessons are taught in Spanish by using visual aids, songs, literature and games.  Montessori materials and Total Physical Response (TPR) activities are also utilized. In Lower Elementary, isolating skills and phonetic awareness proves to be helpful in learning a second language. The Montessori grammar boxes are used to teach the different parts of speech.  Upper Elementary focuses on integrating conversation, listening, reading, and writing, with the use of the Rosetta Stone computer program, thematic units, and a wide variety of manipulatives.

The Middle School is centered around providing the students with the tools for communication, with a strong awareness of intercultural exchanges. Both Montessori Education and International Baccalaureate Organization put focus on enrichment of the whole human being. The Spanish Immersion program includes a week in Mexico every year. In this way we have a concrete realization of the importance of communication between the cultures and peoples of our hemisphere. The progress of the students is closely monitored and assessed and evaluated on a formal basis. The program has proven itself worthy as our students place well in the high school Spanish classes.
