St. Alcuin's visual arts are supported by two full time faculty members, a two room studio for classes, and extensive integration into each individual classroom. Embracing the need to educate young minds to understand, appreciate, and express visual art is a critical goal for St. Alcuin. The resources devoted to this cause have created a strong visual arts program that supports the St. Alcuin student at all levels.
The Lower Elementary art program emphasizes the introduction of the elements and principles of art. Through a study of line, shape, form, and texture, students begin to develop a foundation of the technical skills necessary to understand and create their own art. An awareness of the color wheel helps elementary students understand the facets of color and how they are used to create dramatic results. A study of famous artists and their works permits these young students to participate in their first personal evaluation of various works of art, in preparation to create their own. As students begin to experience various art mediums, they are familiarized with the methods of watercolor, acrylic, and tempra painting, as well as drawing and the creation of 3D art using clay, wire and other products from our environment. These fun activities help children expand their world view and gain confidence to express themselves artistically.
The Middle School curriculum covers the two year period of 7th and 8th grade, and is based on age appropriate and individual development of various forms of artistic knowledge and expression. Students use a variety of drawing and painting mediums to discover possibilities and limitations, develop skills with materials, media, techniques, and processes as well as develop an understanding of art elements with an emphasis on space, perspective, color, and texture. Students learn how to communicate their individual vision through subject matter, symbols, and ideas. Classes discuss principles of art relating to balance, composition, and contrast. Students learn to identify themes, purposes, styles, and art form in different cultures and historical context, as well as how to evaluate concepts and vocabulary to discuss likes and dislikes in works of art. Each students keeps a portfolio, sketch book, journal of all works, and learn to stretch a canvas, make paper, mix pigments, and mat drawings.
